STOP THE USE OF PESTICIDES AND HERBICIDES: Bisson Presents Petition to Protect Health and Enivironment March 17, 2008

MPP GILLES BISSON PRESENTS STRONG PETITION vs. CHEMICAL HERBICIDES

QUEEN’S PARK—On the first day back to Queen’s Park, Timmins-James Bay MPP Gilles Bisson presented a petition today in the Legislature calling for an end to pesticides and herbicides.

The petition was brought to Queen’s Park by Foleyet resident Joel Theriault, who completed law school in Ottawa in 2007 and works as a commercial float pilot in the summer. Theriault and the projects supporters have gathered signatures from across Ontario.

Bisson says there are better ways to control the cosmetic appearance. “You don’t necessarily have to have herbicides to deal with weeds etc. There are natural products that could be used. In fact, if you take a look at the province of Quebec, we all know that the province of Quebec has been way ahead of Ontario and way ahead of the rest of Canada when it comes to dealing with this type of situation by way of legislation.”

Theriault says the environment and health of residents are being ignored. “The medical community has come together calling for limiting the exposure to these chemicals due to health concerns. Forestry companies may make a little more money by spraying herbicides but then the government will have to pay more in medical bills down the road.”

Bisson says Theriault should be congratulated for his efforts and his demonstration of democracy in action.

Bisson not only presented the petition but also discussed the petition during Member’s Statements.

petition from Hansard March 17, 2008

“We the undersigned urge the government of Ontario to prohibit the use of chemical herbicides by the forest industry given the non-chemical alternative which currently exists to meet vegetation management needs and which are used in other parts of Canada, such as Quebec.

“The firm stance against the nonessential use of these chemicals, which has been taken by the medical community having regard to human and environmental health, see www.domtar.org for additional information.

“The significant possibility of violating the rights of all Canadians, especially resource-dependent aboriginal communities to clean drinking water, edible plants, wildlife and fish.

“The largely unfulfilled commitments already made by the federal government to reduce dependency on pesticides and herbicides, see NFSC4.ca for additional information.

“The questionable performance of the federal government to regulate pesticides including herbicides for the health and safety of Canadians. The federal government does not have reliable up-to-date information about pesticides that it needs to it manage them efficiently. It lacks significant information on the use of pesticides and exposure to them.

“Research on health impacts are very limited.

“Overall, we conclude that the federal government is not managing pesticides effectively. In every case, the measures listed on pesticide labels, even if allowed, appear not to be enough to be present.” - Source 2003 Auditor General Report of the Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development to the House of Commons - Chapter 1: Managing the Safety and Accessibility of Pesticides. WHITEMOOSE

We, the undersigned, urge the government of Ontario to immediately stop the commercial application of non-essential herbicides
(a type of pesticide intended to kill plants) in Northern Ontario.

I agree that the government of Ontario should prohibit the use of chemical herbicides by the forestry industry given ;

(1) the non-chemical alternatives which currently exist to meet vegetation management needs, and which are in use in other parts of Canada, such as Quebec.

(2) the firm stance against the non-essential use of these chemicals which has been taken by the medical community, having regard to human and environmental health. See www.HealthyOttawa.Ca for additional information. See www.Domtar.Org

(3) the significant possibility of violating the rights of all Canadians (especially resource dependent Aboriginal communities) to clean drinking water, edible plants, wildlife, and fish.

(4) the largely unfulfilled commitments already made by the federal government to reduce dependency on pesticides and herbicides. See http://nfsc.forest.ca/strategies/strategy5.html for additional information.

(5) the questionable performance of the federal government to regulate pesticides (including herbicides) for the health and safety of Canadians.

“The federal government does not have reliable, up-to-date information about pesticides that it needs to manage them effectively. It lacks significant information on the use of pesticides and exposure to them. Research on health impacts is very limited ..." (1.134 AG).

"Overall, we conclude that the federal government is not managing pesticides effectively." (1.136 AG).

“In several cases, the measures listed on pesticide labels, even if followed, appear not to have been enough to prevent environmental damage.”
